Maj. Gen. Pat Stevens IV retired in 2002 from the United States Army, relinquishing his position as Executive Director of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), a position he had held since July of 1999. Stevens came to SAME from Morrison Knudsen after a two-year stint as its Vice President and Director of Military Services. While on active duty with the Corps, Stevens served as Deputy Chief of Engineers, commanded the former Lower Mississippi Valley Division, was president of the Mississippi River Commission, and also served in the former North Pacific Division and Vicksburg District.

In June of 1996, Stevens was named to serve as the acting Chief of Engineers and acting Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Prior to this, since June of 1995, Stevens had served as the Deputy Chief of Engineers. In addition to being commander of a major Army command, the Chief of Engineers is the senior staff engineer for the Army. He was responsible for Corps missions, including military construction for both the Army and the Air Force; the Army's civil works water resources program, which includes planning, design, construction and operations and maintenance of projects for navigation, flood control, and other purposes; and engineering support to non-Defense Federal agencies. Prior to his selection as Deputy Chief of Engineers, Stevens served as the Director of Military Programs in the Corps headquarters. The son and grandson of Army officers, he is a 1963 graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, and holds a master's degree in engineering astrodynamics from UCLA. He is also a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, the Australian Army Staff College, the United States Army War College, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government's Senior Managers in Government Program.

Maj. Gen. Stevens has served as Commander, Lower Mississippi Valley Division and President of the Mississippi River Commission; Deputy Director of Logistics for Host Nation Support, U.S. Central Command, Saudi Arabia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; Commander, North Pacific Division, Portland, OR; Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Washington, D.C.; Commander, Vicksburg District, Vicksburg, MS; and Area Engineer, Middle East Division, Muscat, Oman. Other key command and staff positions include Executive Officer, lst Engineer Battalion, Fort Riley, KS; United States Exchange Student, Australian Army Staff College, Queenscliffe, Australia; Commander, 30th Engineer Battalion, Fort Belvoir, VA; and Plans Officer, Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Washington, D.C.

Among his military decorations are the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, two awards of the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals, three Meritorious Service Medals, and two awards of the Army Commendation Medal.

Maj. Gen. Stevens and his wife, Isabel, have two children, Nancy and Patrick.
